You’re up, you’re down.
You’re happy one minute, sad the next and you don’t know what to do.
You’re trying to save face in front of your friends, family and co-workers while all along you wish someone or something could make this terrible angst and confusion stop.
You feel out of control, but it’s mostly all on the inside. You are in a crisis. A cyclone swirls within you.
When you feel like this do not act. Find a place where you can be still. At the center of every storm is stillness.
Breathe in and out and focus only on your breath.
When your thoughts and emotions start to run away with you, take control over the one thing you can always do.
Be still and breathe.
Wait and stay with your breath.
Begin to feel the calm that is always there within you.
Wait until you feel the storm pass. Then dust yourself off, get up slowly and approach your life with a renewed sense of strength that is born from stillness.
Life will have many storms, you won’t be able to take cover all the time so be prepared to ride it out and then when it passes, which it always will, go forward with a new perspective from having had the experience.
People who are weathered always look good, and they are wise and strong.
Ice Cream Sundae (happiness in daily life)
Just thinking about having a delicious ice cream sundae brings a big smile to your face.
This inner knowing that things can be really good.
The desire to have a full life is incredibly strong.
This is healthy.
This way of being and thinking is what leads to happiness.
Pursue what you desire and celebrate your daily life.
Live your life to the fullest.
It is so wonderful to pursue and achieve a happy life.
For many of us this may feel like only a dream.
Maybe you’ve fallen upon difficult times filled with sadness, despair, disappointment or fear.
You may only feel happy once in a while and even those times are tainted as you compare them to the rest of your life.
Take a moment.
Take a few deep breaths.
Allow yourself to envision what you truly desire.
Let yourself feel the happiness.
This happiness is yours.
The Mental Temple (creativity)
The spark is there...
We daydream and focus, focus and wonder...
Could I do that?
Should I do that?
How will I start and what will people think?
All these thoughts and feelings swirling around in your head.
Tapping into our creativity is pure bliss, sometimes quickly followed by a surge of pure terror.
We want to express ourselves, whether it be through words or painting, dance or yoga, the list is endless.
Some of us are quiet in our pursuits and displays, while others are bold and out in the open.
Creativity is not something you have to create, it’s within you, but it is also something that if you do not cultivate it, it will die a slow, painful death like a garden choked with weeds or a river under the siege of draught.
We are made to be who we are.
To express this is vital to our happiness.
When we squelch our creativity or share time with others that do not see us for who we are, it is suffocating.
You hear terms like "starving artist" and "creative process".
In other words, people who are absolutely dedicated to their art which is their life and their vitality.
We somehow think that we can curb this desire, this emotional and mental need, but it is insatiable.
Feed your creativity and you will receive the peace that your mind craves.
Battle Cry (authenticity)
Speak your mind.
Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Easier said than done.
We have to know who we are, to speak our minds and mean what we say.
We develop ways of being that are not authentic.
This happens for so many reasons.
Some of them may be family values and belief systems.
Need for compliance. Fear of abandonment. Pursuit of praise. Societal pressure.
When we practice yoga we are pursuing the eradication of suffering.
First, we must identify what is causing our suffering.
Easier said than done.
Take deep breaths.
Authenticity is not something you attain, it’s something you already have.
It’s who you are without considering what someone or some group expects or wants.
Being authentic means being you regardless of who is around or what is expected.
This is not be confused with disregard. Authenticity is the ability to recognize what you truly desire and how you choose to behave.
It’s taking total responsibility for your choices.
Authenticity is courageous.
No one else can know you better than you.
Why the self-doubt?
Why all the suffering?
Every time we don’t say what we mean and mean what we say, we are running in circles deepening the tread of our own demise.
The question isn’t how can I be more authentic.
The question is, who are you if you are not being authentic?
Suffering creates more suffering.
Authenticity is truth. Truth is you.
The whole world shifts to hold you in it’s grace when you release suffering and choose you.
Mind Like a Diamond (hope)
The morning sun dances on the walls and ceiling like confetti falling from above.
The break of day and the mind waking up out of sleep...
Just watching the sun as it becomes brighter, more bold and prevalent...
The many facets of the reflections start to become whole as the mind and body re-enter the waking world.
For this moment each day, there’s just you and the sun.
Knowing that there are some things in this life that won’t let you down.
The sun shines on no matter the weather, circumstance, mood or level of disregard.
The sun knows its purpose – fulfills its purpose each day.
It lets us know that there is always hope.
Even when something can’t be changed, hope, like the sun, remains.
No life is without pain.
No life is without hope.
Even in our darkest and most isolated or terrifying moments, and challenges of the kind when no matter how much effort we put in we suffer loss, the sun will shine on.
The sun doesn't give up, hide or shine less.
This hope lives in your heart.
Just like the sun we can and will rise each day.
Some days are cloudy and some days it storms, but still, like the sun, we rise each day.
Breathe Behind Your Heart (self love)
One of our most important needs is to belong, to feel accepted, to fit in.
However, this need can only be fulfilled with self acceptance or self-love.
We can be so hard on ourselves.
I should have done this, or I should have said that.
If only I had taken that job, or gone on that trip.
Why can’t I seem to pull myself together?
So many other people seem like they’re doing better than I am.
The insecurity, self-doubt, fear of what others say and think and complacency get the best of us.
Take deep breaths.
We can look at ourselves differently.
We can allow ourselves to feel what is real about us.
We are not what people think and say about us.
We are not defined by the outside world.
You know who you are.
Let go of the stress and tension of the latest trends or of societal and family expectation and values.
Chances are you’re probably quite comfortable with who you are and how you think and what you like and dislike.
One of the greatest gifts from the universe is that each of us is unique and each of us is supposed to be here.
We belong by our very essence.
Accepting and loving yourself fully is the greatest gift you could ever give the universe.
When you love and accept yourself it is inevitable you will love and accept others as you see that we are all one and the same.
Tide Pools (self awareness)
Watching as the sun comes up over the horizon.
A blanket of light that seems to touch the ocean one wave at a time.
The break of a new day finds us breathing deeply and feeling intrigued by what we may find.
What might we learn?
Who will we meet or talk to about this or that?
Nature before our eyes as we realize that there's a lot more to this picture.
That there's a lot more to each of us than what we appear to be on the surface.
The sea washes in and out of the tide pools, never seeming to be quite full and yet never seeming to be empty.
Noticing how there is so much life and depth and change happening moment to moment.
We need to take time to reflect, to observe and to acknowledge who we truly are.
What goes on with each breath and how we feel about ourselves when we're not keeping up appearances, but rather how we flow like the sea taking breaths in and out.
Relaxing with what is.
Letting ourselves see and feel the unique qualities and perspective that each of us possess.
Knowing, that like the tide pools, we are all touched by the sea and yet all of our experiences are solely ours.
Know that the depth to which you can know yourself is profound and worthwhile.
When you know yourself, when you are self aware, you experience each and every moment as it truly is and as you truly are.
This is when we know without any doubt that we are held effortlessly in this universe just as effortlessly as the tide flows in and out.

We love the excitement folks have expressed about the OFOS classes! THANK YOU!!! It's been absolutely wonderful to be able explore these sequences in depth and we're only just beginning!
For folks that are new to this, Bethany has spent years writing her own sequences. Everything that we teach at RHY is original and each class works together with the others so that folks get to practice a full spectrum of poses in different orders, and enjoy what that brings to their practice!
Some years ago she put these into a collection and we were going to publish a book ( and still will ) but the evolution of technology really brought everyone's attention onto their phones and Bethany really felt like her attention was needed providing classes and meditations to her Fireheart Yoga YouTube channel.
But the classes themselves have always there and the collection has grown!
She names all of her classes. Each one captures a specific feeling and the sequences are made up of poses that explore that feeling, helping us to celebrate, explore or deal with life. Some classes are built around joy and a deep appreciation of life. Others deal with grief, loss or sorrow. Some are a focus on determination and others are there to help us reach deep levels of introspection. Every aspect of life through yogic eyes can be found in these classes!
We've just begun teaching them and we will certainly explore each much more on this site and other places, but one thing has become immediately clear - we need to post the readings!
The reading are the explanation of the intent of each class. They explore some philosophy, offer some perspective and help to explain more about the intent in creating them.
We will start posting all of these reading here, on the UPDATES page, each week, starting tomorrow on Valentines Day! All of the readings so far will be posted in order to catch up and we very much hope that everybody enjoys them!

Join Bethany Vaughn for her Spring 2018 Yoga Teacher Trainings at the 200 and 500 Hour levels, beginning May 19th & 20th.
Bethany has trained many of Atlanta’s most popular and talented instructors, with RHY graduates uniquely sought after by other studios because of their superior teaching ability.
Over the past decade-and-a-half, Bethany has finely tuned her programs to find the inner teacher within each trainer, and bring them fully into their ability.
Today, there are more studios than ever and the signs of a quality instructor are becoming more and more obvious. Bethany’s intense and insightful ability coupled with her advanced knowledge of the practice ensures that you will be able to offer your classes more.
2018 marks the first time that Bethany will incorporate Fireheart Yoga into the trainings, bringing many of her custom sequences and advanced pose techniques into the forefront. Fireheart is the symbol of Bethany’s personal yoga journey. Her Youtube channel offers free classes so that everyone can practice and her Anti-Abuse, Live Your Truth campaign embodies the spirit of yoga’s ability to heal.
2018 is also the first time that Bethany will offer her Teach For Training (TFT) program at the 500 Hour level, wherein a limited number of trainees will be accepted into the training at no cost in return for their commitment to teach at RHY. Applicants must already be certified at the 200 Hour level (through any Yoga Alliance certified program) and should email Bethany through the Contact page at redhotyogastudios.com. Please include TFT in the subject line.
